Aan liked to do sports, especially basketball, but he did not know the place for playing basketball, and neither did Mello. Since they were not originally from Yogyakarta, they did not know any places, especially for certain sports. The topic initiated by Aan was as the opening in conversation. In addition, Aan successfully made the topic at the beginning. Although Mello did not really know the place, he still gave response to what Aan asked by expressing Oh, Gee I don’t know. Third, the first couple of female students, Sri and Maria, had various topics. They talked about activities, plans, likes and dislikes, assignments, and miscellaneous topics. One of the topics created in conversation is in the following excerpt. Excerpt 72 Context : Sri and Maria shared the morning activities and next activities. Maria : Hmm…[laughing]. Actually I have eaten some breakfast = this morning = Ehm…twice [laughing] Sri : = Hmhm = Hmhm = TWICE? Maria : So, I don’t know in the middle of the class I felt very hungry. Sri : Hungry? And then, what did you eat then? Ap37-10 It is described that Maria talked about her morning activities. Maria said that she ate twice in the morning, but she still felt hungry. Sri responded Hungry? since she was quite surprised. After that, Sri created a new topic about the food Maria ate by expressing And then, what did you eat then?. The data also shows that Sri and Maria mostly used questions to sustain the conversation. Unlike the first couple of females, the conversation created by the second couple of female students was only about Hayu’s life. In this case, Hayu shared about her new class, her previous class, and her motivation for choosing certain subject area. The example of the conversation can be seen in the following excerpt. Excerpt 73 Context : Hayu compared her present class with the class in the previous semester. Hayu : We’re so…well, the people in our class were alike that = Star : = We are crazy and fun. Ap416-17 Excerpt 73 gives details that Hayu compared her present class with the class she attended in the previous semester. She thought that the class was quite different from what she expected. The topic given by Hayu, about the impression of the previous class, made Star comment on it, especially her friends’ characteristics. The data also shows that Star mostly asked questions in order to know the information about Hayu’s problem. Fifth, the conversation produced by the first couple of a male and a female student, Socrates and Rose, shows many topics.
