English language studies. Maria

Sri : Halo, mbak Maria [laughing] Ap31-2
Excerpt 39 describes that the female students made chit-chat after having the class. The expression of greeting and calling her friend’s name was also used
to open the talk. In this case, Maria had successfully started the conversation first by using such expressions.
Unlike the previous couples, the couple of a male and a female student, Al and Esti, used different way in different context. The expression of apologizing to
open conversation was appeared in conversation. The excerpt of the conversation is in the following details.
Excerpt 40 Context

: Ehm…My name is Al. Ehm… = are you… = Ap61-2
The conversation in excerpt 40 shows that they did not know each other well. To open chit-chat, Esti apologized first because she thought that Al was
doing something and was busy. Therefore, she expressed Pardon me to open a contact with Al.
b. Content
The content of chit-chat holds a safe topic. It has been found that each couple created chit-chat and developed the topics. In this point, the graduate
students must have discussed various topics. The couple of male students, Aan PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
and Mello, created a number of topics. One of the topics was about the place for sports. The following is the excerpt of the conversation.
Excerpt 41 Context

like to know about the place where he could play basketball. Then, Aan fulfilled his curiosity by asking Mello. In this case, Aan thought that Mello knew any
information about the sports center in Yogyakarta. The other couple, Sri and Maria, made chit-chat with various topics. One of
them was about plans or next activities. The conversation is illustrated as follows. Excerpt 42

Maria : [laughing] So, what will you do after you go
home? Sri

Because you know from…ehm...from the morning, = I mean like…I haven’t had any breakfast. = Ya
just ate some snacks and I know it’s not healthy = Ya, I’m planning to like…have lunch. Ap33-4
The conversation can be interpreted that Maria wanted to know Sri’s activities after the classes were over. In this point, Maria asked So, what will you
do after you go home?. Then, Sri answered that she wanted to have lunch. The question used by Maria probably aims to create a topic of conversation.
The conversation created by the other couple of a male and a female student also shows several contents of chit-chat. One of the examples of the conversation

did not know each other well. Therefore, Esti asked where do you come from? to get to know each other.
c. Closing
