• To form adjective from verb e.g.:
consider v + -ate

From the data above, there are two functions of suffix –ate. They are to form verb from noun and to form adjective from verb. The word ‘origin’ is
included in noun; if suffix –ist is attached to it, it becomes ‘originate’ that is included in verb. While, the word ‘consider’ is included in verb; if suffix –ate is
attached it, it becomes ‘considerate’ that is included in adjective.
d. Meaning Suffix –ate indicate to say action which is related to the meaning of the
base form. e.g.: motive

Æ motivate ‘to be a cause’
captive +
-ate Æ captivate
‘to charm’
From the data above, it can be seen that if suffix –ate is attached to the word ‘motive’, it becomes ‘motivate’ that indicates the meaning of ‘to be a cause’.
And, if suffix –ate is attached to the word ‘captive’, it becomes ‘captivate’ that indicates the meaning of ‘to charm’.
5.1.15 Suffix –ism
a. Form • It is found that suffix –ism can be attached to the base which is ended by
vowel phoneme. e.g.: active

• It is found that suffix –ism can be attached to the base which is ended with consonant phoneme.
e.g.: human
+ -ism
Æhumanism ideal
+ -ism
Æ idealism • It is found that suffix –ism can not be attached to the base which is ended with
semivowel phoneme. • It is found that suffix –ism can not be attached to the base which is ended with
diphthong phoneme. • It is found that suffix –ism can not be attached to the base which is ended with
cluster phoneme. From the data above, it can be seen that suffix –ism can be attached to the base
which is ended by vowel and consonant phoneme.
b. Distribution Suffix –ism may be attached to the base as follows:
• Noun e.g.:
national n + -ism
Æ nationalism ideal
+ -ism
Æ idealism • Adjective
e.g.: human adj
+ -ism Æ humanism
From the data above, it can be seen that suffix –ism can be attached to the base of noun and adjective. The word ‘national’ and ideal are included in noun. If
suffix –ism is attached to them, they becomes ‘nationalism’ and ‘idealism’.

And, the word ‘human’ is included in adjective. If suffix –ism is attached to it, it becomes ‘humanism’.
c. Function The function of suffix –ism may be described as follows:
• To form noun from adjective e.g.: human

• Does not change the word class if it is attached to the base form of noun. e.g.

d. Meaning Suffix –ism is to show addition or affixation to the object of the base form

From the data above, it can be seen that if suffix –ism is attached to the word ‘national’, it becomes ‘nationalism’ that indicates the meaning of ‘a strong

feeling in love a country’. And, if suffix –ism is attached to the word ‘journal’, it becomes ‘journalism’ that indicates the meaning of ‘the work of collecting news’.
