From the data above, suffix –ic is to indicate the meaning of ‘consisting of or containing an ingredient’. If suffix –ic is attached to the word ‘acid’, it becomes
‘acidic’ that indicates the meaning of ‘consisting of acid’. And also, if suffix –ic is attached to the word ‘alcohol’, it becomes ‘alcoholic’ that indicates the meaning
of ‘consisting of alcohol’.
5.1.18 Suffix -ing
a. Form • It is found that suffix –ing can be attached to the base which is ended by
vowel phoneme. e.g.: smile

• It is found that suffix –ing can be attached to the base which is ended with consonant phoneme.

b. Distribution Suffix –ing may be attached to the base form of verb only.

From the data above, it can be seen that suffix –ing can be attached to the base of verb. The word ‘give’ and ‘play’ are included in verb. If suffix –ing is
attached to them, they become ‘heroic’, ‘giving’ and ‘playing.
c. Function Suffix –ing does not change the word class if it is attached to the base
form of verb. e.g.: play

crying ‘in the process of crying’ From the data above, suffix –ing is to indicate the meaning of ‘in process
of what is mentioned in the base’. If suffix –ing is attached to the word ‘give’, it becomes ‘giving’ that indicates the meaning of ‘in the process of giving s.t.’. And
also, if suffix –ing is attached to the word ‘cry’, it becomes ‘crying’ that indicates the meaning of ‘in the process of crying’.
