5.2.2 Suffix –on

a. Form • It is found that suffix –on can be attached to the base which is ended by vowel phoneme. e.g.: hutu ‘louse’ + -on Æ hutuon ‘lousy’ begu ‘ghost’ + -on Æ beguon ‘have ghost manage to get into’ • It is found that suffix –on can be attached to the base which is ended with consonant phoneme. e.g.: suan ‘plant’ + -on Æ suanon ‘which is planted’ inum ‘drink’ + -on Æ inumon ‘which is drunk’ • It is found that suffix –on can be attached to the base which is ended with semivowel phoneme. e.g.: jomur ‘dry in the sun + -on Æ jomuran ‘which is dried in the sun’ tambar ‘medicine’ + -on Æ tambaron ‘which is treated’ • It is found that suffix –on can not be attached to the base which is ended with diphthong phoneme. • It is found that suffix –on can not be attached to the base which is ended with cluster phoneme. From the data above, it can be seen that suffix –on can be attached to the base which is ended by vowel, consonant, and semivowel phoneme. Universitas Sumatera Utara b. Distribution Suffix –on may be attached to the base as follows: • Verb e.g.: suan ‘plant’ v + -on Æ suanon ‘which is planted’ inum ‘drink’ + -on Æ inumon ‘which is drunk’ • Noun e.g. hutu ‘louse’ n + -on Æ hutuon ‘lousy’ sabing ‘blanket’ n + -on Æ sabimgon ‘which is covered over’ From the data above, it can be seen that suffix –on can be attached to the base of noun and verb. The word ‘suan’ and ‘inum are included in verb. If suffix – on is attached to them, it becomes ‘suanon’ and ‘inumon’. And also, the word ‘hutu’ and ‘sabing’ are included in noun. If suffix –an is attached to them, they become ‘hutuon’ and ‘sabingon’. c. Function The function of suffix –on is to form passive verb from verb. e.g.: suan ‘plant’ v + -on Æ suanon ‘which is planted’ inum ‘drink’ + -on Æ inumon ‘which is drunk’ In the above, it can be seen that the function of suffix –an is to form passive verb from verb. The word ‘suan’ and ‘inum’ are included in verb. If suffix –an is attached to them, they become ‘suanon’ and ‘inumon’ that are included in passive verb. Universitas Sumatera Utara d. Meaning The function of suffix –on may be described as follows: • To indicate the meaning of ‘thing which is’ e.g.: suan ‘plant’ v + -on Æ suanon ‘which is planted’ jomur ‘dry in the sun + -on Æ jomuran ‘which is dried in the sun’ If suffix –on is attached to the word ‘suan’ and ‘jomur’, so they become ‘suanon’ and ‘jomuron’ that indicate the meaning of ‘thing which is. ‘suanon’ indicates the meaning of ‘which is planted’ and ‘jomuron’ indicates the meaning of ‘which is dried in the sun’. • To indicate the meaning of ‘having’ e.g.: begu ‘ghost’ + -on Æ beguon ‘have ghost manage to get into’ hutu ‘louse’ n+ -on Æ hutuon ‘have louse’ If suffix –on is attached to the word ‘begu’ and ‘hutu’, so they become ‘beguon’ and ‘hutuon’ that indicate the meaning of ‘having’. ‘beguon’ indicates the meaning of ‘have ghost manage to get into’ and ‘hutuon’ indicates the meaning of ‘have louse’.
