CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

This chapter consists of two parts, namely conclusions and suggestions. The first part deals with conclusions of the study. The second part deals with the suggestions that are expected to help English teachers and future researchers.

A. Conclusions

This study dealt with the design of a set of English instructional speaking materials using task-based learning for homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum . There were two problems stated in the problem formulation in this study, they were 1 How is a set of English speaking instructional materials using task- based learning for homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang arum designed?, 2 What does the designed set of English speaking instructional materials using task- based learning for homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum look like? In this study, the writer employed Research and Development R D method. The writer only employed the five first steps from R D. Those steps are 1 research and information collecting, 2 planning, 3 developing preliminary field product, 4 preliminary field testing, and 5 main product revision. To answer the first question, the writer adapted Yalden’s and Kemp’s instructional designed models. The writer combined those two models to design the materials because the combination revealed an effective and complete step in PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI 75 designing the materials. Those steps were 1 conducting needs survey, 2 specifying goals, topics, and general purposes, 3 formulating learning objectives, 4 selecting subject contents, 5 selecting learning activities and resources, 6 conducting evaluation survey, and 7 revising the designed materials. Furthermore, the writer’s model applied in this study was appropriate and in line with R D method employed by the writer. To answer the second questions, the writer presented a set of English instructional materials using task-based learning for homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum . The title of the materials is “English Speaking Materials for Homestay Hosts”. There are eight units in the designed materials. Those eight units are presented as follows. UNIT 1 : Greetings and Closings UNIT 2 : Introducing Self and Others UNIT 3 : Offering Helps UNIT 4 : Handling Complaints UNIT 5 : Giving Information about Art Performances UNIT 6 : Describing Menu UNIT 7 : Giving Directions UNIT 8 : Thanking and Apologizing Each unit is divided into five sections, namely Warming- Up, Practice, Language Focus, Communicative Activities, and Language Exercise. Warming-Up consists of activities which aim to activate learners’ background knowledge. The activities are done in groups. Practice contains two examples of dialogue between a homestay host and a foreign guest related to each topic. This section contains activities in pair. Language Focus consists of some useful expressions related to the topic being learnt. The learners pronounce and study the expressions together with the teacher. Communicative Activities section is the main section in these materials. In this section, the learners have opportunities to use free and meaningful language. There are two communicative activities in this section, such as a game and a role play. The learners are encouraged to be active in doing these activities in pair. Language Exercise contains an exercise that is done in pair. It aims to measure the learners’ achievements after doing previous sections. Moreover, the writer also provided a vocabulary list after the last section to help the learner to find difficult words. In this study, evaluation was conducted by distributing questionnaire to the respondents. The respondents gave positive responses toward this design. They stated that the activities in the materials gave a lot of opportunity to the learners to use the language. In other words, these materials facilitated and helped the learners to increase their speaking ability. The data from the materials evaluation questionnaire were analyzed using central tendency. The result showed that the total mean was 4 on the scale 5. After revising the designed materials, the writer concluded that the materials were good, acceptable, and appropriate for homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum.
