b. Learners’ Needs Based on the Interview with the Learners

The writer conducted interview with homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum . The respondents for the interview were eighteen. There were eighteen respondents were interviewed about their speaking ability. Then, the writer chose five respondents from the eighteen respondents to be interviewed about their obstacles and wants in learning speaking. Those five respondents were chosen because they had different educational background. The interview was conducted on February 2-9, 2009. The results of the interview on the needs survey are presented in Appendix E. From the interview about respondents’ speaking ability, the writer found that fourteen respondents were not able to speak English well. Most of the respondents were not able to speak English well because they had lack of vocabulary mastery. Three respondents were able to speak English but they were not able to speak fluently. Therefore, the writer concluded that the learners were in the beginner level. Moreover, the writer found that they had some obstacles in learning speaking. They felt that they had lack of vocabulary mastery. It made them confused when they tried to speak because they did not know the words. The writer also found that one of them was shy to speak English in front of people. Besides, the writer found that one respondent did not have partner to practice speaking. Concerning their expectations of the teaching learning activities, the learners expected fun teachinglearning activities. Learning speaking through games would make the teachinglearning activity interesting. They also hoped that the teacher would give them plenty opportunities to practice speaking. Moreover, the writer found that they liked to learn speaking in group. Concerning their opinions about eight meeting in a mini course for homestay hosts, they said that eight meetings were enough for a mini course.
