a. Learners’ Needs Based on the Questionnaire for the Learners

In order to obtain the data of learners’ needs, the writer distributed questionnaires to homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum on February 2 – 9, 2009. There were 10 male respondents and 10 female respondents, so the total of the respondents was twenty 20. The results of the questionnaire on the needs survey are presented in Appendix D. From the results of the needs analysis, only seven respondents 35 of homestay hosts had joined an English course and thirteen respondents never joined an English course. From seven 7 respondents who had joined English course, five respondents 71 were beginner and two respondents 29 were intermediate learners. There were seventeen respondents 85 who felt that learning English was difficult and three respondents 15 felt that learning English was not difficult. Although learning English was difficult, 18 respondents 90 felt that English was important to be learnt to homestay hosts. Only two respondents 10 felt that English was not important to be learnt. In learning English speaking skill, learners also need to learn English elements to support their speaking skill. Sixteen respondents 80 answered grammar was needed in learning speaking skill and four respondents 20 answered that grammar was not needed in learning speaking skill. Nineteen respondents 95 answered vocabulary was needed in learning speaking skill and one respondent 5 answered that vocabulary was not needed in learning speaking skill. Eighteen respondents 90 answered pronunciation was needed in learning speaking skill and two respondents 10 answered that pronunciation was not needed in learning speaking skill. The respondents were asked about the difficulties that they found in learning speaking skill. In this question, the respondents were allowed to choose more than one options mentioned in the questionnaire. Seventeen respondents 85 answered that they did not know the grammar, nineteen respondents 95 did not know the vocabulary, and sixteen respondents 80 did not know the pronunciation. Knowing the respondents’ difficulties in speaking English, the writer finally categorized the English competence of homestay hosts of Desa Wisata Kembang Arum into beginner level. Based on the last question, the writer decided to rank the top eight 8 topics from thirteen 13 options. The writer presents those eight 8 topics in Table 4.2.
