This study aims to develop a set of designed materials to help the learners to increase their speaking skill based on task-based learning. In this part, the writer will describe three matters. They are background, contents, and purpose.

A. Background

The idea of developing these English speaking materials came up because the homestay hosts need English to communicate with their foreign guests. In order to give the best service, they need to be able to speak English. Since they are adult learners in beginner level and they want to increase their speaking skill for specific purpose, the teacher should be aware of the learners’ characters, needs, and wants in designing the materials. Dealing with the fact above, the writer tried to design a set of English speaking instructional materials based on task-based learning that encourages the learners to use the target language through the given tasks. By completing the tasks that have communicative purpose, it is expected that the learners are able to increase their speaking ability.
