CHAPTER IV RESEARCH FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter presents the findings of the survey research. For the sake of the survey research, the writer divided this chapter into four parts. The first part
was dealing with the Steps of Designing the Instructional Materials. The second part was the Results of Survey Research for Evaluation on the Designed
Materials. Moreover, the third part was Discussion. The last part was Material Presentation.
A. The Steps of Designing the Reading Materials
In this part, there were some steps that were accomplished by the writer in order to design a set of reading materials. The steps are as follows:
1. The Needs survey
The first step is needs survey. The survey was conducted to find out the learners’ needs, difficulties, and interests. As the instrument, the writer applied
the questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to 30 thirty students of Language Program Year XI in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta. Actually, the class
consisted of 33 students; however, only 30 students were present. The survey research was distributed on the 3
rd
of August 2007. The results of the needs survey were considered to help the writer in formulating the objectives and
selecting the topics of reading materials. The writer also interviewed and recorded the result of informal interview with the English teacher in order to find out more

a Description of the Respondents for the Needs Survey
The survey research purpose was to know the learners’ needs, difficulties, and interests. Moreover, the needs survey was also to find out the learners’
learning style.

This part elaborated the data presentation of the needs survey in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta. The following data for the needs survey were gathered
using questionnaires. The questionnaires distributed to 30 thirty students of Language Program Year XI in SMA Stella Duce 1 Yogyakarta. The
questionnaires were written in Indonesian so the respondents would understand exactly what to be answered. The questionnaires were in the closed form. The
respondents chose the answer provided. There were 15 fifteen questions. The data gathered of the questionnaires for the students is presented as follows:
