B. Goal, Topics, and General Purposes
This part discusses the goal, topics and general purposes of the materials. Since the materials was designed for English for Specific Purposes, the goal,
topic, and general purposes must be appropriate with the specific purposes of the materials itself. From the pre-design questionnaire, it could be seen that most of
the staff chose speaking as the skill that they wanted to learn most. However, there were also small amount of the staff who chose listening, reading and writing.
Therefore, the design materials would be focusing on speaking skills combined with other skills that also needed by the staff.
The goal, topics and general purposes were based on the learners’ needs.
In this study the goal of the designed materials was to improve the speaking skill of the staff of
Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan in order to give the best services for the foreign tourists.
The following section showed the findings of the selections of the topics by the staff of Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan. There were 14 topics offered to
the staff of Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan. All topics were based on the staff’s needs related to their job in tourism. There were 27 staff 79,4 who chose
Greeting and Introduction, 25 staff 73,4 who chose Giving Direction, 20 staff 58,8 who chose Giving Suggestions, 18 staff 52,9 who chose Asking and
Offering help, 21 staff 61,8 who chose Number and Price and 18 staff 52,9 who chose Describing people. Next, there were 17 staff 50 who chose
Describing place and things, 21 staff 61,8 who chose Thanking, Showing Appreciation and Apologizing, 16 staff 47 who chose Explaining the history

59 of the temple and 31 staff 91,2 who chose Explaining and Giving information
about Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan. Explaining and Giving Procedure was chosen by 20 staff 58,8, Telling time was chosen by 17 staff 50, Handling
complaints was chosen by 26 staff 76,5 while Weather was chosen by 16 staff 47.
The topics chosen by the staff of Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan was recorded in Table 4.4.

From the result of the questionnaire, there were 8 topics most often chosen by the learners. Those topics were Greeting and Introduction, Explaining and
Giving Information about Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan, Handling Complaints, Giving Direction, Number and Prices, Thanking and Showing
Appreciation, Explaining and Giving Procedure and the last was Giving

60 Suggestion. Then, the writer chose four topics to be developed into materials.
Those were Greeting and Introduction, Explaining and Giving Information about Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan, Giving Direction and Handling Complaints.
There were some reasons why the writer chose those four topics to be developed. Those topics were four topics that were most often chosen by the learners. First,
the writer chose Greeting and Introduction because the learners wanted to learn about this topic. It was the most often chosen topic by the learners. The writer also
determined that this topic was needed by the learners because they will meet and greet many foreign tourists in their working field.
Second, the writer chose Explaining and Giving Information about Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan because they needed to be able to explain something
and give explanation about Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan. For example, they needed to be able to explain about the relief in Prambanan temple or give
information about the facilities in Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan. Third, the writer chose Giving Direction because the learners would need to be able to give
direction to foreign tourists. They need to be able to give direction to foreign tourists using simple language, fluently and acceptably. Fourth, the writer chose
Handling complaints because almost all learners chose this topic. The writer also determined that this topic was important to be developed. Then, the writer
organized the topics based on the level of difficulty of each topic. After getting the topics, the writer can determine the result of functional
skills that were needed by the Taman Wisata Candi Prambanan Staff. They were: Greeting foreign tourists

Giving solution Next, the writer determined the general purposes of each topic. The
general purposes were significant to achieve the goals. Table 4.5 shows the goal, topics and general purposes of the materials.
