2. The Translation Techniques
The translation techniques that have been applied by the translator are in the second discussion. This research analyzes what techniques used to translate figurative
language. There are 11 translation techniques, including mixed translation techniques, which are applied in translating figurative language. Below are the examples of each
technique which are applied to translate figurative language.
a. Borrowing
Borrowing aims to introduce element of the source text to the target readers by perceiving the words without translating into another language. It is the fewest
translation technique applied by the translator. This technique appears one time or 0.39 in the data findings. It is used to translate hyperbole which has fully equivalent
expression as the result of the quality of translation product in terms of equivalence. SE

The underlined phrase is the example taken from datum 131Hy-HyBrFE. The phrase ‘Bule Gila’ is not translated into another language. ‘Bule Gila’ refers to
the common language that is used by Indonesian to express a foreigner who acts silly which means ‘crazy foreigner’. In this context, the speaker wants to express how
excited he is to hear his old friend whom is foreigner. That is why perceiving the meaning and style of the source text borrowing is an appropriate technique that is
used by the translator to translate this phrase. Besides, it can be a medium to introduce this expression to the target readers.
b. Compensation
Compensation is one of the translation techniques used to introduce information of the source text in another place in the target text. In data findings, one
datum or 0.39 appears.It is categorized as personification and the result is partly equivalent. Below is the example and the explanation.
SE :Penataan rak-rak dan koleksinya begitu elegan, lapang, berharmoni dan
tidak berteriak. TE
: They do not scream each other. Datum No.247: 247Pe-PeCnPE
The example is taken from datum 247Pe-PeCnPE. There is a little bit difference in translating. In the target text, the words ‘tidak berteriak’ is separated but
it is translated in the next sentence by adding ‘they’. Pronoun ‘they’ is substituted by
the arrangement of shelf and the collections. That is why it is called compensation because the source text is translated into another place in the target text.
