Figurative language is not translated in target language. It means that the translator does not translate the source text. The following is the example. SE : “…disinilah ia menghirup udara kerja professional, memperluas jaringan dan melihat Jakarta dari dekat .” TE : “ …and it was the gate that led her to more opportunities. And she got to see Jakarta up close.” According to the example, the meaning and style of both texts are different. In the source text, the speaker said that this is a place to her to learn and start to be a professional employee. Meanwhile, in the target text, the meaning is having a job in that place; she will get more opportunities to her carrier. Hence, the translation product is categorized as non-equivalent expression translation.

7. Summary of 9 Summers 10 Autumns

9 Summers 10 Autumns tells about Iwan’s life in reaching his goal in New York. He was raised in a “little house” at the foot of Mount Panderman, Batu, East Java along with four sisters and loving parents. His father worked as a minibus driver. His mother was the person who gave all of her attention to her children. Struggling in poverty, they managed to crawl and reach a better life. To get his dreams, Iwan, as the only boy in his family, started to dare himself to change his own fate. He tried the best until he could go to New York to work for ninesummers tenautumns which makes his life meaningful for his family and himself.

8. Related Study

In order to get a research topic, the researcher has read some researches related to translation. There is one topic that is chosen which deals with translating figurative language. However, the research which is related to the topic can not be found in the library of Yogyakarta State University. Therefore, the researcher needs to find related topic through other medium which is internet. Using e-library of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, the related study can be found. This research was written by Grahaprilwana entitled “An Analysis of Figurative Language Translation in Mark Twain’s Novel Entitled Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”. This research aims to investigate the kinds of figurative language, to investigate the techniques used by the translator in translating figurative language and to judge the quality of the translated version of the figurative language. The differences between this research and Grahapr ilwana’s research are the theoritical framework of figurative language and the data. In the previous research, types of figurative language are taken from Frost while this research employs types of figurative language from DiYanni. In addition, the data sources of the research are different. Grahapilwana’s research takes from Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn and its translation whereas this research takes from 9 Summers 10 Autumns and its translation. However, both have similarity in analyzing the translation of figurative language in the novel and its translation.

B. Conceptual Framework

This research aims to analyze how figurative language in the novel is translated. The data concern with the translation of figurative language in 9 Summers 10 Autumns. It also employs the translation product to evaluate the quality of translation of figurative language. To get further analysis, the research focuses on the types of figurative language, the translation techniques and the equivalence in terms of sense and form. As the framework of the research analysis, some theories are applied. The theories help the researcher analyze the problems formulation of the research and to measure the quality of equivalence in terms of sense and form. In addition, this research employs translation as product which is the result of aesthetic-poetic translation because it is related to the translation of figurative language. Figurative language and its translation are the main focus of the problem. They are combined with the relevant theories which are types of figurative language, translation techniques and parameter equivalence. In assessing the quality of translation of figurative language, the researcher adapts from another research which has similarity to determine in terms of meaning and style equivalence.
