B. Discussion

The discussion section presents the deep explanation of each finding. In order to answer the formulation of the problems, the discussion is divided into three parts. The first part deals with the types of figurative language found in the source novel, 9 Summers 10 Autumns. The second part deals with the translation techniques which are applied by the translator in translating figurative language. The last part of this section deals with the degree of equivalence in terms of meaning and style.

1. The Types of Figurative Language

The first part that has been analyzed is the types of figurative language found in the source novel to target novel. In order to categorize the types of figurative language , this research used DiYanni’s classification. He divides into 7 types of figurative language, namely simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, litotes, metonymy and synecdoche.

a. Simile

Simile which is found in the source novel appears 37 times or 14.43 in the data findings. This type is mostly translated using literal translation with fully equivalent as the result of degree of equivalence in terms of meaning and style which is 18 data. Below are the examples and deep explanation. SE : “Aku bisa merasakan kesejukan masa kecilku. Seperti air hujan yang menetes di kepala, di depan rumah kecilku. ” TE : “I can sense the comfort of the years that had gone by. It is like the rain that drops onto my head in front of my childhood home .” Datum No.22: 022Si-SiLTFE The example which is taken from datum 022Si-SiLTFE shows simile. The speaker tries to compare his happiness with the feel of raindrops onto his head. The way of comparing, he adds ‘seperti’ or ‘like’ that makes both sentences are categorized as simile. Because of the same category, the technique used by the translator is literal translation with fully equivalent expression is the quality of translation product. SE :Suara Nico di iPhone seakan memecah kesunyian di sepanjang Sullivan Street. TE : Nicos voice on my iPhone breaks the silence around me, all the way through Sullivan Street. Datum No.130: 130Si-HyMdPE The source text taken from datum 130Si-HyMdPE belongs to simile because the speaker raises ‘seakan’ which aims to compare something. However, the target text is categorized as hyperbole because the translator translates the source text using direct comparison without adding ‘as’ or ‘like’. It makes the style of this datum more exaggerating. As a result, it is considered as partly equivalent by using modulation as the technique to translate the source text. SE :Aku berkeliling dari lantai satu ke lantai lain sampai ke lantai teratas, seakan melihat sebuah pameran. TE : I went from one floor to the next, until I reached the top floor and it was as though I was looking at an exhibition. Datum No.193: 193Si-SiLTFE The example above belongs to simile. It is presented through the comparison of the light and the color of rainbow. The speaker wants to show person who has charismatic in inspiring others. Furthermore, she is described as the light which is like the color of rainbow. The translation product is considered as fully equivalent which is resulted from literal translation.

b. Metaphor
