CHAPTER V CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSIONS
This chapter consists of two main parts, namely conclusions and suggestions. The first part deals with conclusions of the study. The second parts
deals with the suggestions that are expected to help English instructor for Registration and Information staff of a hospital and future researchers.
A. Conclusions
The study was to design English instructional speaking materials for Registration and Information staff of Panti Rapih Hospital. As stated in problem
formulation, this study was aimed to find out how a set of English instructional speaking materials for Registration and Information staff of Panti Rapih Hospital
was designed and to present the English instructional speaking materials. Therefore, the first question stated in problem formulation deals with the steps of
the designing materials and the second question concerns with the presentation of the designed materials.
In order to answer the first question, the writer employed Research and Development R D method. R D consists of ten steps, but the writer only
employed step one up to step five. Those steps are 1 research and information collecting, 2 planning, 3 developing preliminary form of product, 4
preliminary field testing, and 5 main product revision.
Besides adapting R D steps, the writer also used the instructional design model adapted from Yalden’s and Dick and Reiser’s. The writer combined these
two instructional design models and formulated seven steps to conduct the research. Tho
se steps are 1 diagnosing learners’ needs, 2 formulating the goals and objective, 3 developing and implementing the classroom procedure, 4
designing the syllabus and the lesson plans, 5 designing the materials, 6 evaluating the materials, and 7 revising the materials.
In the first step of R D, which was research and information collecting, a needs survey was conducted by interviewing and distributing questionnaires to
the Registration and Information staff in order to gain information related to the study and especially, to decide the topics of the designed materials. In planning
step, the second step of R D, the writer stated the goals and objectives of the study in order to construct the syllabus and the lesson plans later on.
In the third step of R D, the exercises, activities, teaching techniques, and subject contents were created to complement the syllabus and lesson plans,
which also produced in the third step of R D. In this step, the materials were also designed according to the syllabus and lessons plans. Therefore, in the
preliminary field testing, the fourth step of R D, a materials evaluation was conducted in order to gain suggestions, comments, and feedback from the
respondents of materials evaluation questionnaire. The last step is main product revision. In this step, the materials revision was conducted and then, the writer
presented the final version of the designed materials.
To answer the second question, the writer presents the final version of a set of English instructional speaking materials for Registration and Information
staff of Panti Rapih Hospital using Communicative Language Teaching. The designed materials contain eight units. Those units are presented as follows.
UNIT 1 : Hospital Routines
UNIT 2 : Asking P
atient’s Identities UNIT 3
: Giving Information to the Patients UNIT 4
: Telephoning UNIT 5
: Asking Patient’s Chief Complaints UNIT 6
: Giving Reason UNIT 7
: Offering Help UNIT 8
: Giving Direction within the Hospital Building
Each unit is divided into four parts, namely Let Us Try, Keep In Mind, Practice All This Way
, and Use What You Have Learned. The first part, Let Us Try
, contains some conversations to help learners obtain a description about the languages used in the conversation and learn how to act as in the real situation.
All conversations are read in pairs and by doing this part, the learners would find
it easier to come into the related topic. Keep In Mind Part contains some
expressions and vocabulary games that are related to the language function and the conversations given. This is aimed to help the learners understand and then,
produce the correct form of utterances based on the language function. The learners are asked to read and practice saying the expressions and words given.
The third part, Practice All This Way, deals with the exercises related to
the topic. This part is aimed to improve the learners’ understanding about the related topic being discussed since the exercises used are based on the topic. The
learners are expected to be able to do some exercises. Some exercises are done
individually and some of them are done in pairs. The last part in each topic, Use What You Have Learned
, deals with the kinds of the activities based on the objective of the study, which is to make the learners to be able to speak in
English. The activities are in form of pair work, take turn, games, group work, and mini role play. The activities force them to practice communicating with others
using the expressions and words, which have been learned in the previous part. In this study, the writer conducted evaluation by distributing questionnaire
to the respondents. The respondents granted positive responses by stating that the materials was well developed, creative, sufficient, and interesting. The data from
the materials evaluation questionnaire were analyzed using central tendency mean. The results showed that the mean ranged from 3.2 up to 4.6 on the scale
of 5.00. This showed that the materials were acceptable to be used for the Registration and Information staff of Panti Rapih Hospital.
