proper and well-mannered English sentences. Therefore, all the respondents stated that English language was very important for them in their department
considering their hospital, in the global world, will concern about the hospital with International services.
Some respondents stated that in order to master English language, they needed materials which were related to their job. Speaking skill was their first
choice to master English. Then, vocabulary matters also gave important part for them to be able to learn English. Some patient forms had translated in
English but there was still one form for the patient which was not translated in English yet. The form was patient identities or information form.
The respondents, lastly, provided their suggestions to the writer about what they actually and importantly needed. The respondents suggested that
they, immediately, needed materials consisted of conversations, vocabulary, questioning sentences, and tenses in English. Then, this issue would be the
consideration for the writer to design the materials.
b. Learners’ Needs Based on the Questionnaire
In order to obtain a clear description of students’ needs, the writer distributed questionnaires to the Registration and Information staff of Panti
Rapih Hospital from 18

of May 2009. The number of respondents for questionnaires was 20 people. The data of the questionnaires were as follows:

From the table, we can see: 1 Most of them are male.
2 11 people 84,62 are in beginner level. 2 people 15,38 are in intermediate level.
3 Related to their age, 16 people 80 are between 30-39, 3 people 15 are between 40-49, and one people 5 are between 50-59.
The first question was about their daily language in working area: one people 5 use Javanese, 15 people 75 use Indonesian, and 4 people
20 use both Javanese and Indonesian. The second question was about their experience in learning English.
About 13 people 65 said that they had taken English course and seven people 35 said that they have never taken any English course.
The third question was about their level of study English language. This question was only for respondent who had taken English course 13
people. About 11 people 84,62 are in beginner level and 2 people 15,38 are in intermediate level.
The fourth question was respondents’ opinion about English. All of them thought that English is very important to their job.
The fifth question was the respondents’ desire to speak English fluently. All of them wanted to speak English fluently.
The sixth question was about the respondents’ experience in serving foreign patients. The writer found that all respondents have experienced in
serving foreign patients. In seventh question, based on all respondents, English was needed in serving foreign patients.
The eighth question was about the media which can help respondents learn English. The finding is as seen in the Table 4.2. below: the respondents
may choose more than 1 choice

The ninth question was about the opinion of the respondents if there will be an English course for them. Nine people 45 chose once a week, 10
people 50 chose twice a week, and one people 5 chose three times a week. The tenth question was about how long the ideal time for one session
is. Nine people 45 need 45 minutes, 10 people 50 need 60 minutes, and 1 people 5 need 90 minutes for one session.
The last question in session I of the questionnaire was about the difficulties which the respondents faced in order to master English language.
