Learners’ Needs Based on the Interview

1. Diagnosing Learners’ Needs

The needs survey was very important in finding out the learners’ needs. Therefore, the writer conducted interview and distributed the questionnaire in Panti Rapih Hospital. The interview and the questionnaire were for the Registration and Information staff of Panti Rapih Hospital. The detail information of these two results are presented below.

a. Learners’ Needs Based on the Interview

The writer interviewed five respondents of the Registration and Information staff of Panti Rapih Hospital. The interview was conducted from 9 th to 11 th of June 2009. The staff said that they worked in a shift. In the Registration and Information Department, all the workers could have different job and role in each day. One day they worked in a medical record division, and the other day, they could move to the front office division or registration division. The staff always met foreign patients everyday although there was just one foreign patient in a day. The foreign patients often asked about some information around the hospital. Giving information about doctors’ schedule, explaining insurances, giving information about the price and class of room in the hospital were some questions commonly asked. There were just one respondent who could speak English slightly. He had joined English course, although the course was for tourism. All respondents confessed that they did not understand and mastered English language well. Some of them could not make or arrange a simple sentence just to ask the foreign patients. Some of them were also afraid to speak in proper and well-mannered English sentences. Therefore, all the respondents stated that English language was very important for them in their department considering their hospital, in the global world, will concern about the hospital with International services. Some respondents stated that in order to master English language, they needed materials which were related to their job. Speaking skill was their first choice to master English. Then, vocabulary matters also gave important part for them to be able to learn English. Some patient forms had translated in English but there was still one form for the patient which was not translated in English yet. The form was patient identities or information form. The respondents, lastly, provided their suggestions to the writer about what they actually and importantly needed. The respondents suggested that they, immediately, needed materials consisted of conversations, vocabulary, questioning sentences, and tenses in English. Then, this issue would be the consideration for the writer to design the materials.
