Noun Phrase Intra-sentential Code Switching
context, Marion said that they Maybella and her do not have to act like a saint and pretending to be nice.
Based on the data above, the speaker switches Indonesian into English in a form of a phrase. The intra-sentential code switching occurs as a phrase
“
acting all saint-like
” in the middle of the sentence. The phrase “
acting all saint-like
” here occurs as an object of the sentence. In this case, the verb phrase appears in the
form “
acting all saint-like
”. Based on the theory written in the chapter two of this research before, the verb phrase can only appear in the form of present or past
tense. In other words, the code switching “acting all saint-like” is not supposed to belong to verb phrase, but the writer sees this data as the whole context.
The code switching appears in one sentence : “Lagian, gue nggak ngerti
kenapa kita harus
acting all saint-like
kayak gitu, padahal Rashi sendiri sering ngancurin hidup orang dengan cara yang sama.” The sentence was divided into:
“gue nggak ngerti kenapa kita harus
acting all saint-like
kayak gitu ”.
“I do not know why we must acting all saint-like that” In the data above,
the word “gue” I uses as the subject, “nggak ngert” do not know
as the predicate and “kenapa kita harus acting all saint-like kayak gitu” why we must acting all saint-like that as the object.
The object of the sentence, “kenapa kita harus acting all saint-like kayak gitu”, then divided into:
“Kenapa kita harus acting all saint-like kayak gitu” Why we must acting all saint- like like that
Based on the previous partition, the word kenapa why uses as the interrogative word, kita we as the subject, harus must as the modal, acting all saint-like
kayak gitu acting all saint-like that as the predicate, and kayak gitu like that as the object. Based on the English grammar, the correct form to be used is act,
because there is a modal “must” before the phrase “acting all saint-like”. In this case, the code switching data belongs to verb phrase because it has a
role as the verb and uses verb as the head, but the author uses the wrong form of the tense, considering the author uses the word acting instead of act. The writer
sees this case as the inaccurate code switching applied, considering that in Indonesian, there is no tenses and Indonesian word is not categorized and divided
based on the time. In conclusion, the code switching data above belongs to the verb phrase of Intra- sentential code switching types which uses inaccurate
English form of code switching. The second data of intra-sentential code switching in a form of verb phrase
can be seen in page 77. Here is the data below: Data Code
