The efect of soil management on ecosystem services in oil palm plantations

192 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2013 biodiversity plays in ecosystem functioning and crop production. The Biodiversity and Ecosystem Function in Tropical Agriculture BEFTA Project aims to quantify the efect of habitat complexity within oil palm plantations on biodiversity and the role of this biodiversity in ecosystem functioning and productivity. In particular the project will: 1 quantify the efect of habitat complexity in maintaining biodiversity, ecosystem function and ecosystem services within oil palm 2 develop novel experimental approaches for partitioning the efects of habitat structural complexity and aspects of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning, and 3 predict and model optimal cover of understory and epiphyte vegetation in oil palm plantations so as to maximise biodiversity and economic proitability through ecosystem services. 120.1 Dr. Edgar Clive Turner Warga Negara : Inggris Jabatan : Ailiated Researcher Institusi : Dept. of Zoology, University of Cambridge No. SIP : 72EXTSIPFRPSMIX2013

Abstrak The provision of ecosystem services is underpinned by ecosystem processes, the changes in the stocks and lows of materials in an ecosystem, resulting from interactions among organisms and with their physical-chemical environment, 193 Sekretariat Perizinan Penelitian Asing Kementerian Riset dan Teknologi DIREKTORI PENELITIAN ASING DI INDONESIA 2013 such as nutrient cycle, water regulation and soil fertility. Understanding how the variability in these processes afects the resilience of ecosystem services to environmental change is key to appropriate ecosystem management, and soil management practices in oil palm plantation provide a good model to investigate these links between ecosystem processes and services. In this study, I will look at how soil management in oil pam plantations afects the variability in soil functioning and the consequential efects on ecosystem service output The aims of this study are:1To identify the impact of soil cover and fertilizer management on nutrient cycling and soil structure 2To link the dynamics of nutrient cycling and soil structure to ecosystem services provided in oil palm landscape. 3To compare the diferent ecosystem function-service mechanisms between large plantations and smallholders, and to understand the decision making factors of soil management. 121.1 Ms. Hsiao-Hang Tao Warga Negara : Taiwan Jabatan : Ph.D. Candidate Institusi : University of Oxford No. SIP : 195SIPFRPSMVI2013 122.
