DESIGNING A SET OF ENGLISH SPEAKING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS BASED ON IGNATIAN PEDAGOGY
FOR THEOLOGY STUDY PROGRAM STUDENTS THE GENERAL DESCRIPTION
A. Background
The aim of this research is providing a set of English speaking instructional materials for Theology Study Program students of Sanata Dharma
University. The English speaking materials is intended to support the vision of Theology Study Program of Sanata Dharma University which is stated in the
Academic Guideline Book of Theology Study Program. The vision of the Theology Study Program of Sanata Dharma University is to prepare graduates in
three main areas. First, the graduates should be able to reflect and communicate critically the Christian faith in the Indonesian context. Second, the graduates are
expected to have skill dealing with their congregations. Third, the graduates are expected to excell in creating a fair and just environment well to all God’s
creation. To achieve those aims, English is offered in the Theology Study Program
as one of the Profession Skill Courses Mata Kuliah Berkarya taught in the first and second semesters. Moreover, speaking is one of the skills taught in the course
which is intended to facilitate the students to communicate with others on religious topics and daily live topics. The material was designed because there are
no speaking materials based on Ignatian Pedagogy to facilitate the Theology Study Program students to improve their speaking skill. Therefore, the researcher
proposes a solution through Research and Development RD. The researcher

of Sanata Dharma University. The designed materials is designed based on Ignatian Pedagogy.
According to Kolvenbach 1993, Ignatian Pedagogy is the way in which the teacher accompanies the students in their growth and development. Moreover,
Ignatian Pedagogy is the foundation of Sanata Dharma University’s learning model. Ignatian Pedagogy is a paradigm with inherent potential for going beyond
mere theory to become a practical tool and effective instrument. Therefore, this set of speaking materials is expected to facilitate the students of Theology Study
Program of Sanata Dharma University to learn and grow through encounters with truth and exploration of human being.
B. Purpose
The purpose of this research is to provide a set of speaking instructional materials based on Ignatian Pedagogy for the first semester students of Theology
Study Program of Sanata Dharma University. Therefore, the materials can facilitate the students to achieve the goals that have been formulated by the study
program.
C. The Participants
The participants who will use this designed material are the first semester students of Theology Study Program of Sanata Dharma University as stated
previously that English is one of the Profession Skill Courses which is offered in the first and second semesters. Their speaking skill is various. Therefore, the
76 designed speaking materials is expected to facilitate them to achieve the goal of
the speaking competences.
D. Content
There are four units in the designed materials. The topics of each unit are chosen based on the students’ characteristics, lacks, and the students’ needs in
their academic situation. The topics are: Unit 1 : Nice to Meet You
Unit 2 : May I Help You? Unit 3 : Where am I?
Unit 4 : What Do You Think? In the designed materials, the activities are arranged from easy to difficult.
The researcher designs the materials based on Ignatian Pedagogy. There are five steps in each unit. The steps are context of learning, experience, reflection, action,
and evaluation which is describe as follows: 1.
Context of Learning In this part, the researcher explores the students’ background of knowledge
about the topic discussed. In this part, the students are helped by some questions as the guideline. The students are also asked to share their opinion with their
friends. By sharing with their friends, they can enrich their knowledge more and they learn to respect others’ opinion.

In this part, the students learn about the materials deeper. The students will read some explanations and some examples of dialogues. First, the students will
