1 Necessities
Hutchinson and Waters 1987: 54 define necessities as what the learner has to know in order to function effectively in target situation. The following
tables present the necessities based on the students’ opinion.

Table 4.1 shows that 96.25 of students will use English to communicate with strangers and 96.25 of students will use English to continue study in the
future. However, based on the result of the interview with the English teacher and some students, in the future, students will use English to look for a job
besides to pass the examination. The excerpt can be seen as follows. R :

Biar gampang cari kerja karena saya tidak berniat untuk kuliah.

Students are prepared for national examination and MEA because vocational students are

Therefore, from the two perspectives, it is gained that the students will use English for any purposes in the future. Students will use English not only to
communicate with strangers and to continue the study but also to pass the examination and to get the jobs easily.

Based on Table 4.2, there are 97.5 of students who agree and strongly agree that their expectation in learning English is to be able to master the
English vocabulary related to automotive field. They also expect that in learning English, they will be able to understand the meaning and the use of
words, sentences, and expressions in English and to be able to master the English grammar.
