objective needs. The classroom observation was conducted to analyze learners’ characteristics as seen in the first step of ASSURE model. To collect required information about review of literature dealing with the objective need, the researcher analyzed the curriculum that was implementing in SMP Pangudi Luhur Yogyakarta. To collect information about students’ characteristics, the need analysis Students’ questionnaire and Teachers’ interview and field notes classroom observation were conducted.

a. Core Competence and Basic Competence for Reading in Junior High School

Since the Ministry of National Education has introduced new curriculum, curriculum 2013, most of teachers in Indonesia starts to implement the curriculum 2013 at school, including in SMP Pangudi Luhur 1 Yogyakarta. It is not easy for the teacher to implement the new curriculum at the school because the new curriculum has not been socialized well. The curriculum 2013 for Junior High Scholl is divided into three parts including grade 7, grade 8, and grade 9. The focus of English for Junior High school in 2013 Curriculum is to communicate in English related to daily life. In English that is included in curriculum 2013, there are four core competences that must be delivered to the students in grade 7. Those four core competences deal with religion, environment, science, and practical work. Those four core competences are developed into four basic competences. The four basic competences are being grateful for the opportunity in learning English, doing interpersonal interaction with the teacher and peers, understanding the social function, text structure and language elements, and composing the simple oral and written texts. The simple oral and written texts that must be delivered to the students in grade 7 are greetings and introduction, time, and short functional texts such as descriptive text, procedure text and short notice. The teacher’s responsibility is to implement those four core competence and basic competence in the teaching learning activities in each meeting. It is not an easy task for the teacher to implement all of those elements in one meeting. Therefore, the socialization of curriculum 2013 is very influencing in the success of implantation curriculum 2013. The students real needs, thus, was about using English as a means to communicate about students’ daily life. The topic that should be used in the designed learning model must be related to students’ daily life; everything that appeared in students’ environment such as home and school.
