CHAPTER V CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION
A. Conclusion
Having discussed the research questions related to the topic, in this part the writer will try to conclude the findings from the answers. The answers to the
problems will be directly provided and summed up from the discussion. Based on the first analysis in the previous chapter, it can be observed that
there are 39 English singular-plural forms found in Deadly Game and Permainan Maut
considered inaccurately translated. 31 of them are the inaccuracy in translating English plural forms and 8 are the inaccuracy in translating the English
singular forms. The inaccuracy problems above have created three types of changes, they are meaning change, perspective change and atmosphere change.
What is meant by meaning change is the change in meaning, for example in S1 in which the translation of one of his comics is changed into komiknya
which should be salah satu komiknya since Jake has many comics. The perspective change can be seen in S9 where the sentence Jake raises an eyebrow
is totally changed into Jake mengangkat alisnya. The translator sees this case as some other sentences which he only needs to translate them as what they are,
while in fact, the author views this sentence as an idiom. The atmosphere change can be observed in S8 where the atmosphere of the subtitle Human Sacrifices is
turned less scary. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
After dividing all the scores that are given to each data with the number of data, the writer concludes that the inaccuracy problems above have caused the
target text get 2.743 which, according to Nababan’s accuracy category, means that the target text, regarding the singular-plural forms, is nearly not accurate. The
assessment is based on some principles: 1. the translator tends to translate the English plural words in the source text
into singular forms in the target text 2. the translator also tends to translate the English singular words in the
source text into plural forms in the target text 3. the restructuring and the rewriting that the translator has made can develop
different meaning, perspective and atmosphere toward the original story 4. the translator, in one hand, tends to add several unnecessary explanation in
the target text 5. the translator, in other hand, tends to omit several necessary information in
the target text
There are some other effects that arise because of the inaccuracy problems above, except the three changes. The first effect is the different idea that the ST
and the TT readers get as can be seen in S4 and S31 in which the word the words is translated inaccurately into its singular form suara which causes a different
meaning. This argument is also stated by R2 and R3. The next effect is a characteristics changing as can be seen in S19. The tough characteristic of Jake is
wholly changed into a kinder one because of the inaccurate translation of the PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
plural form stupid baby games into singular form permainan tolol seperti itu. This means that the translator does not really appreciate what the author wants to say in
the story. The last effect is reader exclusion as in S9 and S11 in which the pronoun you to include the readers to be the character is totally changed into
mereka which excludes them from the story.
To support the argument, the writer has distributed questionnaires to five respondents from different background of education. Two of them are the English
lecturers, two are the English Letters students, and the last is an English instructor graduated from Management department. Three of them agree that, regarding the
singular-plural forms, the translated novel is inaccurate since the inaccuracy problems can affect the story. As stated in the analysis that some arguments are
expressed by the respondents. One respondent, R2, thinks that the inaccuracy problems can decrease the
“mental” description and give a different understanding for the readers, for example in translating in the trees means more than one in S33 into di balik
pohon means one which should be pepohonan means more than one.
Another respondent, R3, says that the “feeling” in the source text will not be delivered fully in the target text and the information details are sometimes
changing in the target text, for example in S4 and S31 in which the word the words
is translated into suara which should be kata-kata.
The other respondent R5 gives an opinion that some of the inaccuracy problems can result in ambiguity that can make the readers hardly understand the
story and if keep reading the translated version they can find some strangeness. PLAGIAT MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TERPUJI
Another opinion is given by two respondents R1 and R4. They do not disagree if the English singular-plural forms in the translated novel are considered
accurate that the details are not really needed as long as the context and the terms which are used in the target language are delivered clearly and the readers can still
understand the story. It is inappropriate to say foto-foto for the word the displays because such problem will not decrease the meaning.
In general, it can be concluded that the Indonesian novel Permainan Maut is inaccurate in terms of singular and plural forms translation although there are
two respondents who argue that it is accurate. Two respondents state that the inaccuracy problems above can create different idea and feeling between the
source text and the target text, two other respondents argue that the problems can cause ambiguity, and the last respondent thinks that the problems will not affect
the story at all. In answering the last problem, why the translator shifted some forms, the
writer has conducted an interview with the translator. From the interview, the writer has found out that actually the translator does not really know that he has
done a translation shift on some singular-plural forms. He is just trying to make effective the sentence based on the context as when translating S4 in which the
word the words is translated into suara since he thinks that the meaning of muffled in Indonesian language is not appropriate to describe kata-kata. Also when
translating S1 in which the Indonesian word sedang is not suitable to explain salah satu komiknya
which he states that the word sedang must be followed directly by the noun komiknya.
