Abstract – Malay language has the greatest influence in shaping “Bahasa Indonesia.” View in terms of geographical, indeed, Malaysia is the neighbors of Indonesia, and many areas on the island of Sumatra to the west of Borneo people who using Malay language. However, they are only 15% of the population of Indonesia. Thus, geographical factors and the amount can not be fully answered on the reasons how Malay language could influence bahasa in general. One thing you may be able to answer is the historical development of society and the relationships of the Malay to the other islands in Indonesia. This study attempted to answer questions about the reasons to how Malay language could be the greatest influence on shaping of bahasa. This study used literature study of cultural and historical, especially discussing about Malay language history. The results show that of several references that the Malay language can provide far-reaching impact to bahasa, because the first, Malay people have an extensive trade routes in Indonesia, met some people in Indonesia, and slowly replaced Sanskrit language. After Srivijaya empire in Sumatra established, that controls much of Indonesia and expanded the Malay culture. Malay language in Indonesia had strong legitimacy as a language with a great tradition because of the strong literacy culture. In the end, Indonesian language as this time, has received legitimacy from Sumpah Pemuda in 1928. Although the original Bahasa Indonesia is Malay language, has been transformed into Indonesian and has gotten a lot of influence from other foreign languages.

Looking at the history, the literacy tradition of Malay is not less than other

languages and even English. Not surprisingly, the use of Malay language became S G the largest and the greatest influence in Southeast Asia and even became one of IN D

the largest language in the world. Malay language is used as a national language

in many countries including Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore and Malaysia.

Malay language even supports Islamic education in various countries such as

Cambodia and Vietnam. Malay language a minority language in many countries

in the continent of Asia, Australia and, the Netherlands in Europe. Considering

the urgency is so great of Malay language, this has spawned many studies I2 N

devoted to the spread and influence of Malay language in various countries

around the world.

In Indonesia, the Malay language has had an important role in shaping Bahasa Indonesia. In fact, many people mention that Bahasa Indonesia is the Malay language. Many historians believe that the spread of Malay language in Southeast Asia, especially in Borneo, Indonesia started from the ground, exactly from West Kalimantan. Thus, it is not surprising that the greatest influence on the formation of Bahasa Indonesia is Malay language.

However, an important question here is why the Bahasa Indonesia is so thick with Malay syllables then if it is seen that the language in Indonesia there are many great and has significant differences from the Malay language. In fact, the Bahasa Indonesia is the Malay language, so this paper will further explain how the historical aspects that make the Malay language became the national language in Indonesia.
