Perubahan cuaca, suhu, tekanan udara, tumbuhan yang hidup di atas batuan, dan bahan kimia yang mengenai batuan dapat menyebabkan batuan rusak atau lapuk kemudian pecah menjadi batuan-batuan yang lebih kecil lagi. Batuan-batuan ini lama-kelamaan akan menjadi butiran-butiran halus. Apabila terjadi hujan, buitran-butiran halus tersebut kemudian akan terbawa oleh air dan mengendap di daerah aliran.
