B. Discussion of Research Findings
In this sub chapter, the research will focus on the problem statements and how they are answered. As stated in Chapter I, the first problem statements is kinds of
translation variations of address forms which are applied by the subtitler in translating
address forms in the film “Casanova”. The second one is the strategies applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film “Casanova”, while the last one is the
effect of the strategies applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film
“Casanova” toward the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy and

1. Kinds of Translation Variation of Address Forms applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film “Casanova”
From the analysis, the English and Italian address forms can be translated variously into Indonesian:
1. The English address forms in the form of Second Person Pronoun are translated
into Indonesian in the form of Indonesian pronoun kau, anda, -mu from kamu, and kalian for the plural form. These can be translated into another
form which is considered more polite and appropriate in the TL such as TuanTuanku, Nyonya and Bapa. 2

person pronouns can also be translated into zero form in the TL.

The English address forms in the form of Kinship Terms are translated into Indonesian kinship terms too. However, there are some data which still
maintain the original forms. 3.
The address form in form of Titles is divided into two kinds. They are English Titles and Italian titles. The English titles are divided into three forms; they are
English Profession Title EPT, English Nickname Title ENT and English Hierarchical Title EHT. However, there is changed translation in which the
Hierarchical title is translated into zero form. Meanwhile, mostly for the Italian titles, the translator maintains the original version in the translation.
4. The English address forms in the form of Names mostly are translated
unchanged into Indonesian. The unchanged form means that the translator still maintain the term of address as in the SL especially FN, LN, and CN.
Meanwhile, TLN English and Italian titles plus Last Name are translated variously into Indonesian and Italian. However, there are some data of names
which are translated into zero form. 5.
The English address forms in the form of Endearment and Other Expression are translated variously into Indonesian; similar sense, similar form and zero form.
2. Strategies applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film “Casanova”.
From the analysis, I found that there are four strategies applied by the subtitler
in translating the film ‘Casanova’. Those are transference, substitution, deletion and
similar meaning. The following table shows the data included in each of those strategies.

The first strategy is transference strategy. This strategy may be required for SL cultural words to provide local color of the SL culture. As stated by Catford
1995:43,”it is possible to carry out on operation in which the TL text, or rather, parts of the TL text, do have values set up in the SL; in other words, have SL meanings. We
cxxxviii call this process, transference”. Often, in transference, the SL terms are embedded in
the TL text. The terms may be unfamiliar in the receptor language. However, it is an appropriate method to respect the SL country’s culture and to bring the cultural nuance
of the SL. In this study, I found that transference occurs in 94 data of 380 data. The percentage is 24.74. Transference happens in kinship terms 2 data, titles 8 data,
names 82 data, endearment and expression 2 data. The second strategy is deletion. From 380 data, there are 17 data 4.47
belongs to this classification. As stated by Newmark that deletion in translation is required in case that the term is marginal to the text. However, this strategy may
influence the formality of the utterances and diminishes the strategy build by the speaker. Therefore, the subtitler should limit herself or himself in using this strategy.
This strategy causes the loss of politeness of the address forms of the source language. The third strategy used by the subtitler is substitution. From the analysis, I
found 13 data belonging to this strategy and the percentage is 3.42. Substitution happens in 2
nd
person pronoun 11 data and in endearment and expression 2 data. As stated by Larson 1984: 72 that it is very important for a translator to know how
substitute words are used and consider carefully the use of pronouns in the TL. It is one of the subtitler effort’s to translate the address forms naturally in the TL.
Moreover, it will be more suitable for Indonesian cultural values. The last strategy is translated the address forms into similar meaning.
Similar meaning here refers to propositional meaning where we can judge an utterance as true or false. Here, there are 256 data or about 67.37 from 380 data.

3. The effect of the strategies applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film “Casanova” toward the quality of the translation in terms of accuracy
and acceptability.
The effect of the strategies toward the quality of the translation of this research is measured from its accuracy and acceptability. It will be presented in the
following part.
