CHAPTER III RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
A. Research Type and Design
A study needs a certain method to reach the goal. As Hadi states that, a study is an effort to find, explore, and examine the truth of knowledge, by using a research
method 1983: 4. Therefore, this research uses a descriptive qualitative method. Here, descriptive method means this research aims only to describe the important
phenomenon in this research Suryawinata Hariyanto, 2003: 173. In this method, the researcher collected the data, classified, analyzed, and then draw conclusion based
on the data Hadi, 1983: 3. This research only describes the concerning data without generalizing the result of the study.
Meanwhile, qualitative method is used because this research is a qualitative research Moloeng, 2004: 5. This research employed qualitative method because the
data used in this research are in the forms of words Moleong, 2004: 9. As stated by Sutopo, the data in qualitative research consist of words, sentences or pictures 2002:
35. According to Yin in Creswell, 1998: 63, the type of the analysis of the data can
be a holistic analysis of the entire case or an embedded analysis of a specific aspect of the case. Thus, the type of this research is an embedded case study since I only focused
on a specific aspect of particular case: the kinds of translation variations of address
forms applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film “Casanova”, the
translation strategies applied by the subtitler in translating address forms in the film
lxi
“Casanova” and the effect of the translation using the strategies to the quality of the
translation in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
B. Data and Data Source
Data source is the object from which the data are selected for the research. According to Arikunto, data source is the subject from which the data are taken 1998:
114. Data source has an important role in providing the information needed by the researcher. Djajasudarma states that the data can be obtained from scripts, interviews,
photographs, videotapes, personal documents, etc. 1993: 15.
The data source of this research is the film “Casanova” and the Indonesian
subtitle. The other data sources are informants. These informants are raters. Here, there are three raters who consist of two lecturers from English Department of Sebelas
Maret University and one professional translator. Here, the professional translator is a person who works in UPT2B Sebelas Maret University. By using these three raters, the
accuracy and acceptability of the translation will be assessed objectively. Here, I chose three raters under the following criteria:
v Mastering Indonesian and English language
v Having adequate knowledge and experience in translation in order to know the
accuracy and the acceptability of the translation. v
Willing to participate in this research Meanwhile, the data of this research are the utterances containing address forms in
the film “Casanova”, and the scores collected from the informants assessing the
quality of the translation accuracy and acceptability.
lxii The consideration to take the film as the source of data is because it is interesting
to study the translation of the address forms since it has an important part in contributing to the enjoyment of the viewers. Besides, this film is inspired partially
from the autobiography of Giacomo Girolamo Casanova, a famous Venetian adventurer, writer and womanizer.
C. Method of Data Collection
