Pemanfaatan Pasir Merapi Pasca Erupsi Sebagai Media Pengolah Air Yang Mengandung Besi dan Mangan Tinggi

Abstract
Water as an essential need for living organisms, can not be replaced its function. The quality of water consumed by living organisms, especially human being, will effect the
degree of his health. Well-water in the edges of Code river is susceptible to quality change because of the Merapi’s volcano-mudflow flood and activities surroundings. In the other
hand, Merapi’s sand could have potential to be used as filter media. A study of determining the best treatment for Merapi’s sand, the height of sand media and the number of chlorine
diffuser orifice was done to find the optimum combination of the operational condition for water treatment purpose.
To have a description of well-water quality in the edges of Code river, nine sampling point represent upstream, middle and downstream area were taken. Furthermore,
study was continued by: a determining best treatment of Merapi’s sand, arranging in phases of determining best combination of using KMnO4 solution concentration of 2,5, 5,
7,5 and soaking time 8, 16, 24 hours continued by determining best diameter of sand - 8+10, -10+14, -14+18 mesh; b determining best height of filter sand media 70, 85,
100 cm using activated filter device; c determining best number of chlorine diffuser orifice 20, 30, 40 orifices applied in the well.
The study shown that well-water quality in the edges of Code river on the summer time is relatively good for Fe and Mn, turbidity is slightly above the maximum level and
coliformfecal coli is above the maximum level for all samples. The best treatment of Merapi’s sand as activated media filter can be achieved by using 5 KMnO4 solution,
soaking time 24 hours and media height of 100 cm. Application of chlorine diffuser in the well shown that 40 orifices give best result for reduction of coliformfecal coli. Package of
activated filter device can be used as applied technology to improve well-water quality, especially for those which contain high Fe dan Mn.
