Inflorescence: synflorescence simple, or compound, fastigiate, or fasciculate. Inflorescence composed of racemes, terminal and axillary. Raceme single, bilateral. Rachis fragile at the nodes. Spikelet packing abaxial, 2-rowed, sunken, in pairs: fertile spikelets sessile, 1 in the cluster; companion sterile spikelets pedicelled, 1 in the cluster. Pedicels fused to internode. Glumes reaching apex of florets, firmer than fertile lemma. Florets: basal sterile floret male, or barren, with palea; lemma hyaline, 2-nerved. Fertile lemma hyaline, no keel, no wing. Palea hyaline. Anthers 3.

Hemarthria coromandelina Steud. Syn. Pl. Glumac. 1: 358. 1854. Ophiuros corymbosus L.f. C.F. Gaertn. Suppl. Pl. 114. 1781. Ophiuros tangcalingii Elmer Henrard. Blumea 43: 520. 1941. Plants perenial, tufted, erect, robust grass. Culms c. 100 cm long, 3 mm thick, terete, very hard, solid, glabrous. Nodes not hairy; internodes 22 cm, glabrous. Sheaths 7 cm long, long-ciliate along outer margin, otherwise with long, rather rigid tubercle-based hairs or glabrous. Ligule short, truncate. Blades 35 cm by 1.2 cm, linear, with broad, rounded or obtuse base margin with short stiff hairs –setae – , 1 mm long, long hairy behind ligule, with long, tubercle-based hairs above or along the margins, likewise so beneath or glabrous, apex acuminate, the surface with glabrous and prominent central nerved. Inflorescence: synflorescence compound, fasciculate, 5- 20 cm long. Inflorescence composed of racemes, terminal and axillary, subtended by a spatheole; spatheole linear, 32-5 cm long. Peduncle widened at apex. Racemes single, terete, bilateral, 5-9 cm long. Rachis fragile at the nodes. Spikelet packing abaxial, regular, 2-rowed; internodes oblong, 2-3 mm long. Spikelets sunken, in pairs: fertile spikelets sessile, 1 in the cluster; companion sterile spikelets pedicelled, 1 in the cluster. Pedicels fused to internodes, united wholly. Fertile spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets, 1 fertile florets, without rachilla extension; oblong, dorsally compressed, 2.5-3.5 mm long, falling entire; callus base truncate, with central peg, attached transversely. Sterile spikelets: companion sterile spikelets represented by barren pedicels. Glumes dissimilar, reaching apex of florets, firmer than fertile lemma. Lower glume as long as spikelet, at first appressed, later recurved, with broad base, and narrowed, obtuse to acutish apex, between margins with some faint nerves, in interspaces with tubercles or transverse ribs, glabrous. Upper glume with narrowed apex, 3-nerved, glabrous. Florets: basal sterile florets barren, with palea; lemma ovate, hyaline. Fertile lemma ovate, hyaline, no keel. Palea hyaline. Herb. 46: 540-541. 2003. From the Greek pogon “a beard”, and ather “the awns on an ear of corn”, referring to the beard-like appearance of the fine awns. About 10 species in the world, from Africa, Asia, Australasia, and Pasific. Plants perennial. Culms erect, or geniculately ascending, or prostrate, or rambling. Ligule an eciliate membrane, or a ciliolate membrane. Inflorescence composed of racemes, terminal and axillary. Racemes single. Rachis fragile at the nodes, subterete; internodes linear. Spikelets in pairs. Fertile fragile sessile and pedicelled, 2 in the cluster, the upper smaller. Pedicels filiform, or linear. Fertile spikelets comprising 1 basal sterile florets, 1 fertile florets, without rachilla extention; elliptic, or oblong, laterally compressed, falling entire; callus pubescent, or pilose, or bearded, base obtuse, attached transversely. Glumes exceeding apex of florets, firmer than fertile lemma, thin; the lower broad and hairy at the apex, the upper awned. Florets: lower floret male in the sessile spikelet, neuter in the pedicelled; upper floret female in the pedicelled spikelet, hermaphrodite in the sessile, lemma deeply cleft, with a long slender awn, Stamens 1, or 2.
