Syst. Veg. 2: 574. 1817. Plants annual, caespitose. Culms up to 13 cm long, less than 0.5 mm thick, geniculately ascending, branching intravaginal, glabrous. Nodes glabrous; internodes c. 3 cm long, glabrous. Sheaths 2 cm long, with scattered nodular hair up to 2 mm long. Ligule less than 1 mm long, a fringe of hairs. Blades 3 cm long by 2 mm long, inroled when dried, margin with nodul, base cuneate, apex acuminate, the surface glabrous on both side. Inflorescence 5 cm long, a panicle, panicle branches stiff. Spikelets solitary; fertile spikelets pedicelled; pedicels oblong, 2 mm long; fertile spikelets comprising c. 15 fertile florets, with diminished florets at the apex, oblong, laterally compressed, breaking up at maturity; rachilla persistent; retaining paleas. Glumes deciduous, similar, shorter than spikelet. Lower glume ovate, 1.6 mm long, as long as upper glume, 1-keeled, 1 – 3-nerved, apex acute. Upper glume ovate, 0.7 times length of adjacent fertile lemma, 1-keeled, 1 – 3-nerved, apex acute. Florets: fertile lemma ovate, 1.5 mm long, chartaceous, glandular on nerves keel, keeled, 3-nerved; lemma lateral nerves distinct, apex obtuse. Palea keels scabrous; apical sterile florets resembling fertile though underdeveloped. Anthers 3, 0.3 mm long. Caryopsis with adherent pericarp, oblong, 0.7 mm long.
