i. Modulation
The first strategy applied in this datum is modulation. Newmark in Suryawinata and Hariyanto 1988:88 reiterates that it is a strategy used by the
translator when heshe has different perpectives in seeing the message contained in the ST sentence 2003:75. This strategy is applied in the clause love was
mine to give and it is translated into cinta ini bisa kuberikan. The translator does not give the statement that the love
is John‟s as it is mentioned in the ST, on the contrary, the translator explains that the love is John‟s in the word kuberikan.
The prefix ku in the TT is an explanation ab out the love that John‟s going to
give. It is different from the ST, which stated that the love which is John‟s will
be given to Savannah. The translator also prefers to use the word bisakuberikan instead of akankuberikan to translate the words to give. The word bisa can
describe that something is able to be done, rather than akan kuberikan, which sounds like the action of giving is still on the plan and not yet done.
