The implementation of Local Literature in the Teaching and Learning Activities.

11 Konferensi Int ernasional Kesusast raan XXII UNY-HISKI, 2012 involves cultural knowledge that students know the cultural system both inside and outside the system. Fifth, literacy involves problem solving that students know the language as the tool in expressing the idea. Sixth, literacy involves reflection and self- reflection that students know the relationship between language and words. Seventh, literacy involves language use that students have linguistic, cognitive and social knowledge. I n other words, students can use language that is English as a media communication.

2.3. The implementation of Local Literature in the Teaching and Learning Activities.

Teacher can use local literature as one of their teaching materials. The local literature materials can be used into certain skills such as: reading, writing and speaking. The translation of Andrea Hirata’ s Laskar Pelagi- The Rainbow Troops and Sang Pemimpi-The Dreamer, Ayu Utami’s Saman, Djenar Maesa Ayu’s Mereka Bilang Saya Monyet- They say I ’m a Monkey, are good example of local literature materials. They can be used as one of materials in Introduction of Literature, Drama, Prose, and Poetry classes. Those local literatures are well-known among I ndonesians. I n fact, some of these local literatures can be seen in movie, e.g. Laskar Pelangi and Sang PemimpiMereka Bilang Saya Monyet. As a result, the students have already known the story. Therefore, they understand well the plot, setting, and the characters of these stories. The stories of these local literatures are interesting to be discussed by the students. The following are suggestions for class work that teachers can develop based on their needs. Before giving the activities, teachers have already explained theories of literature and also have asked students to read one of these local literatures. The activities are, as follows: 1 Who are the main characters? Describe those physical and personalities of the main characters briefly Which characters do you like and dislike? Why do you like or dislike the character? 2 Where is the setting of this story? Draw the setting that you like and tell the reason why you like it 3 What are the problems in this story? How is the solution of this story? 4 At the end of this story, what happen to the main characters? 5 What moral values are found in this story? What do you learn from the stories? 6 Write an essay about this story. You can choose from one of these elements: plot, characters, setting, theme, moral values, symbolisms, figurative language. Meanwhile, one of stories in Kumpulan Cerita Rakyat can be used as one of materials in drama or play performance. They are : Timun Mas, Bawang Putih dan Bawang Merah, Bandung Bondowoso dan Roro Jongrang, Joko Tarub,The Myth ofTangkuban Perahu. Again, before giving the activities, teachers have already explained the elements of drama play performance and how to write a script and have already asked students to read one of these stories. The activities are : 1 Discuss the plot, characters, setting of the story. 2 Rewrite the story into the script. 3 Draw the setting of the story 12 Konferensi Int ernasional Kesusast raan XXII UNY-HISKI, 2012 4 Discuss the costumes with the member of the group 5 Practice with the member of the group 6 Perform the story in front of the class.
