Accurate Description of the Meaning Accuracy

considered accurate since there is no meaning distortion in the target text though the forms are different. Though in terms of accuracy it is considered accurate, in terms of acceptability it is considered less acceptable with the mean score 2.33 two point three three, in which the second respondent considers it acceptable score 3 but the first and third respondents consider it less acceptable score 2.

b. Less Accurate

This research discovers that there are 92 data or 51.11 considered less accurate. The interpreting is considered less accurate if most of the content of the message in the source language is accurately conveyed into the target language but there are some meaning distortions, meaning additions, or meaning omissions. The first example, from datum 121seg23039:50Add.7BB, is presented as follows. SE: Seventy times seven. TE: Tujuh puluh kali tujuh kali. [Seventy times seven times.] In this example, the word “times” in the source expression is doubly interpreted in the target expression. Here, the interpreting is considered less accurate since the mean score is 2.33 two point three three for the accuracy, in which the first and second respondents consider it accurate scores 3 but the third respondent considers it inaccurate score 1. The third respondent considers it inaccurate since the word „seven’ will be accurately interpreted as „tujuh’ literary, „seven’, not „tujuh kali’ literary, „seven times’. In addition, it is also considered less acceptable with the mean score 2.33 two point three three, in which the second respondent considers it acceptable but the first and third respondents consider it less acceptable. Another example, from datum 030seg4207:44Sub.1BA, is presented as follows. SE: He started to push me, he started to poke me, and hurtful little bit. TE: Dia mulai dorong-dorong saya, dan mulai sakit. In this example, the source expression “He started to push me, he started to poke me ” is subtracted in the target expression as “Dia mulai dorong-dorong saya ” literarry, “He started to push me”. Here, the interpreting is considered less accurate since the three respondents consider it less accurate scores 2. It is less accurate since the expression “…he started to poke me…” is omitted in the target expression. Though it is less accurate in terms of accuracy, it is acceptable in terms of acceptability in which the three respondents consider it acceptable score 3 since the interpreting sounds natural; the technical terms used by the translator or interpreter sound familiar to the readers or listeners; the phrase, clause, or sentence used by the interpreter is in accordance with the rules of the target language. The third example, from datum 109seg20636:19Alt.5BB, is presented as follows. SE: But woe to him, by whom they come A . TE: Tetapi hati-hati; terkutuklah orang yang membuat akan bencana- bencana ini A . [But be careful; woe to someone who makes this disaster.] In this example, since there is a semantic difficulty in transferring the language expression to the target language, the interpreter uses alterations to make the interpreting have the same effect to the target listeners though it is still considered less accurate by the three respondents, in which the mean score is 2 two for the accuracy. It is considered less accurate since the expression “…woe to…” is interpreted as “…hati-hati; terkutuklah…” literary, “…be careful; woe to…” in which it is better not to employ the expression „hati-hati’ literary, „be careful’. In addition, in terms of acceptability it is considered less acceptable with the mean score 2.33 two point three three for the acceptability; the second respondent considers it acceptable score 3 but the first and third respondents consider it less acceptable 2; especially in the expression of “…hati-hati; terkutuklah …” literary, “…be careful; woe to…”, in which the use of the expression „hati-hati’ literary, „be careful’ before the expression „terkutuklah’ literary, „woe to’ sounds less natural. Another example, from datum 121seg23039:50Add.7BB, is presented as follows. c. Inaccurate This research discovers that there is only 1 datum or 0.56 considered inaccurate. The interpreting is considered inaccurate if the content of the message in the source language is inaccurately conveyed into the target language or is deleted. The example, from datum 096seg17431:13Sub.6CC, is presented as follows. SE: All heavy metals poison the brain. TE: Semua logam-logam berat itu adalah… ya… [All heavy metals are…ya…] In this example, it can be seen that the expression of “…poison the brain” in the target expression is not transferred correctly in the target expression. Here, the interpreting is considered inaccurate, in which the three respondents give scores 1 one for the accuracy. The three respondents consider it inaccurate since the expression of “…poison the brain” explaining why heavy metals are dangerous is not transferred in the target expression. The semantic absence of such expression in the target expression can be seriously misleading if the listeners do not understand English, which is the language the source speaker are speaking in. In addition, in terms of acceptability it is considered unacceptable since it is not conveyed in a complete sentence.

3. Description of the Expression Acceptability

While the previous section is dealing with the meaning accuracy of the interpreting, this section is dealing with the expression acceptability of the interpreting produced by the interpreter using techniques of adjustment. In assessing the acceptability, likewise in assessing the accuracy, this research involves three respondents in which the first respondent is an English Education graduate and then the second and third respondents are English Language and Literature graduates majoring in Translation. Then, the acceptability is classified into three levels acceptable, less acceptable, and unacceptable based on each score. The interpreting is considered acceptable if the average of the scores given by the respondents is between the ranges of 2.56-3.00, less acceptable is between the ranges of 1.56-2.50, and unacceptable is between the ranges of 1.00-1.50.
